Stale face.

I need help. I am in a beauty/makeup rut. I haven't bought new makeup in about a year, except for the quickly consumable products like foundation and mascara. The makeup I bought a year ago (or shall I say, my mom bought for me...) was still mostly basics- eyeliner etc. Every time I do my makeup, I feel stale. I feel like my face looks stale, and bland, and blah, and like everyone can tell. I feel dull, lackluster, and *stale*. So this is a lame post, but merely a plea for help. Does anyone else ever feel this way? I feel like I need a major makeover. I need new makeup, new tips, a new look. I also feel like I'm losing the skill of applying makeup. How is it that I can be getting worse? My makeup applying skills are atrophying, and I don't like the looks of where this is headed. I can see myself 10 years from now, just having given up and succumbing to what I look like naturally without the dramatic aid of hair and makeup styling. We simply can't let that happen, for the good of humanity. So please, share. What are your favorite beauty tricks, and most important, products? I need new makeup! Maybe for my birthday...

My favorite makeup is MAC. It's sort of expensive, but it lasts forever. I've had an eyeshadow for two years. I wear it everyday, and it's just about to run out. Maybe that's gross but it's the truth. My favorite beauty trick is to buy a magazine like Marie Claire (or any other that has new makeup tips) every new season. They always have great tips about application of makeup, the latest colors, etc. Also, if you buy makeup from a department store have the sales girl help you out. They love to do little demos on their hands if you don't have time for a full application.

This post is so funny to me because I think you always look so put together and "fresh". Wish I could offer even a little advice, but as you have probably been able to tell, I know little myself. I see things that I think would look good on me, but then I try it and it looks nothing like that, or I feel like it looks like I tried too hard.

Just know that everytime I see you I am thinking, "Wow, Jessie looks so not stale and hot!"

I always think of you as fresh-faced too, and as being very knowledgeable about makeup. I'm clueless and buy cheap crap, so I have no advice, but I'll certainly be reading the comments you get so I can get a clue.

go to the bobbi brown makeup counter and get a makeover.
tell them thank you! go home and see if you like what they did. buy any products that you think you can find similar at a drug store and then if there is something awesome that they used go back and buy it. but not the day of the makeover.
this is what i usally do.
i buy most of my makeup at the drug store but a few key pieces from bobbi brown (you could use any place but she is my favorite)
of recent they showed me this hard liqud blush. i found the exact same thing at walgreens for $3.00 instead of $30.00
i do use a few of their items and they last for an eternity.
but i am all for the free makeovers at the counters why not?

I love to talk about makeup! I will get my sisters over here...it's their expertise. My mom just told me yesterday that DeDe got a new eyeliner from Mac that just came out yesterday, I can't wait to hear about it.

As for me...I still buy all of my makeup at Walmart but my mom and Beeca have given me nice things as gifts. I did a post on my new favorite lipstick in February. Here's what I wear...
Covergirl Marathon mascara (waterproof)

Maybelline Mousse foundation

Club A Mistake Proof Blush (it is all colors of beads to match everyone. Your skin tones are supposed to "pull out" the colors that look best on you) Walmart sells similar things, my mom gave me this YEARS ago, they last FOREVER. I started feeling Barbie pink a couple of years ago and bought the Physician's Formula bronzing beads and dumped them in too so I wouldn't be so pink.

Smashbox creme eyeliner on my bottom "lid"

Smashbox and BonneBell eyeshadow (one for the top the other for the middle)

Liquid eyeliner for my top lid.

My mom gave me the Smashbox stuff, I do really like it and they have some things at Costco now for a reasonable price.

I think lipstick is the key. Every time I think someone looks especially fabulous I realize that it is because they have lipstick on. I would love how everyone STAYS looking good all day. I have 20 good minutes and then get very "stale." Perhaps I need a makeover too, since I have had some of these items for years.

Sorry for all the info. - hope you really wanted to know! I will probably be back. I can't stay away from makeup talk. Off to get the girls...

Sorry...sorry....sorry..I'm back (less than 1 minute)

I forgot the best part!!! The lipstick!!!

I wear Cover Girl Color Stay #542 or 661 if I am wearing red.

And my new favorite is Maybelline Superstay, raisin.

If you haven't used all day lipstick before I would say go with the Maybelline not everyone loves the Cover Girl like I do.

Thanks for your time...

So today is the day that I can respond to your post! This is Tina by the way and before I moved to Abilene Texas I was a make up Artist for Lancome and Estee Lauder at Saks Fifth Avenue in Dallas. There are many things that I don't know about but I do know cosmetics!
First of all department stores are the best for looking and seeing what is the new trends for the season. Sometimes they are crazy colors or themes but a good place to look is clinique or Bobbi because they usually keep it clean and simple. Clinique right now has a really cute look for the summer and the great thing is that it's about the least exspensive cosmetic line at department stores and they give you free gifts if you spend $21. 50 or more during gift time so you get to try new stuff that is coming up. One of my best friends, Marissa, is the counter manager at Clinique at Macy's at the Orem mall so you can ask for her. She is the best.
The other thing you should know is that there is nothing wrong with cosmetics at the grocery store or Wal-Mart or Target. Estee Lauder owns like 75% of all the cosmetics companies and they just repackage alot of the same products. Maybeline, Loreal or Almay are good companies to buy from. The only disadvantage for "grocery store" cosmetics is shelf life ( it may not be that fresh) and you cant touch and feel it. That's why you go to department stores and see and feel it and then go to Target to duplicate it for a fraction of the price.
One very very important item to have is a bronzer. A bronzer is a product that you can wear all year round and it can give you just a little pick me up that you need. I think someone always looks healthy and fresh a with a little bronzer. Alot of people buy 2 different colors of foundation for summer and winter and there really isn't a need for that. Just add a little bronzer if your foundation is feeling alittle too light and your set to go!
I am sorry I am so long winded but there is just so much to say.
Always remember LESS IS MORE!

Ok Tina again.I keep reading that everyone has had their things for "years"! Please, Please THROW IT AWAY! Cosmetics is ideal for bacteria to live and grow. Mascara should never be kept longer than 3 months. I know you are all gasping but there are actual "mites" (bugs) that grown on our eyelashes and they live in mascara. It can make your eyelashes fall out and give you eye infections. I've seen it people so just buy another one. Who can't afford $4 every 3 months? My favorite is Voluminous by Loreal I think.

The general rule for cosmetics is if it's in a liquid form keep no longer than 6 months. It's dry no more than 1 year. This includes eyeshadow, blush and powder. Dry things can also harbor bacteria. Always wash your brushes once a month. Those things get nasty. Wash them with face soap and lay them down to dry.

You probably know more than I do about makeup. I love the expensive stuff but never buy it. I guess my favorite thing would be the MAC white shimmery cream that I put on the inside corners of my eyes and on my browbone. I feel like it makes me look more awake, even when I'm feeling really tired. Also, lipstick. I feel put together when I'm wearing it. I don't put eyeliner or mascara on my lower lashes because it just smudges off, no matter what. I started doing that when I noticed that Ashley didn't wear anything underneath and she looked great!

Yeah...I'm pretty much with Hannah on this one. I always think you look 'fresh' and beautiful Jessie - seriously, you amaze me. And, what little makeup I do have and wear on a regular basis is the cheap stuff. Though lately, I have been thinking about going down to Meier and Frank(Macy's) to look around, and try something new. We should go down there sometime and get made over.

Mark doesn't like when I wear makeup - if he had his way, I wouldn't wear ANY. But seriously, I personally can't handle that. It's not that I am just trying to look good for other people - I just feel nasty and less confident if I don't have a little makeup on. I know what you mean by feeling stale, and blah, especially when I don't have any on. I don't feel a need to wear a lot of it, but just enough to highlight the good things I have got, and hide the bad things.

Mmmkay, so I am thinking I just rambled, but hopefully it makes some sort of sense!

I know what you mean about feeling "stale." I get stuck in a rut and sometimes need a jolt of something new to get me out of it. I agree that a "makeover" from one of the makeup counters is a good idea, although--unless you know someone is good--you might end up knowing more than they do. Another thought--ask a friend (who wears makeup well) to do your makeup. Everyone has different tips and tricks, and maybe she'll give you some new ideas. I've enjoyed reading all the ideas above!

OOOh!! Makeup is my most favorite topic!! I think I did a post about a month ago that was so similar to this! I KNOW EXACTLY how you feel!! I din't like my makeup, my hair, I just looked BLAH!! I'm personally a huge, huge fan of Benefit cosmetics. I love their Benetint- you can use it as a liquid blush or as lip stain. (really great) I also love their "Hollywood Glow" for accenting cheekbones/browbones, although they have this product called "High Beam" that is also good for that (it comes in a little bottle like nail polish). I live and die by Rimmel's Professional Liquid Eye Liner... I can't find it in NYC (ridiculous), so I just stocked up at Wal-Mart when I was home in rural PA. :) As for mascara, I'm a HUGE FAN of L'Oreal Double Extend mascara- the first white coat- brilliant. I've tried others and that is my favorite. So those are the products that I like, but as for my personal beauty thing for when I feel blah- I buy the little "individual" fake eyelashes at Wal-Mart or CVS and glue them to the outside corners of my eyelashes. It looks totally natural but glamorous- I was always like, fake eyelashes = drag queens... but not the case!

Don't you love how makeup gets everyone talking?!

I love all the tips that everyone gives. Yeah!

My musts are my bronzer, good lipstick in many colors and clear lip gloss from C.O. Bigalow (bath and body works) and mascara. I have recently started to line my eyes with powder put on using an angle brush. I love Ulta 3, which is a company in Chicago. I also like bobbi brown and MAC, there are certain things that are worth the cost and others that are just over rated.

After reading Tina's post, I'm going to go and wash my brushes. I knew about the bacteria problems, that is gross.

Thanks to all.

Wow so much information! Good thing I am pretty last...I got to read them all! Well the thing that perplexes me is that after so many years we should all be Experts right? I think it is a skill and only using it and trying new things makes it get better. I always like to wear foundation...if I am going to wear make up! I like it to make a difference--especially if it makes you look smooth and no blemishes. Powder also I like translucent from Estee Lauder and usually I have stuff from everyone...makes it fun
