Jill-Leave Now!

...or any other spider-phobes!
Seriously-this is a hardcore picture of a spider-even for me. This thing caught my eye because it was vibrating it's enormous web like a trampoline. It wasn't too hard to catch my eye since it is practically neon yellow and a good 2 inches long. You know it's a big spider when I absolutely cannot convince Bella that it's not a bird! Wow- have you ever mistaken a spider for a bird? And we were obviously close enough to make a good assessment. It even freaked me out and I had to get pretty close, all the while expecting it to leap at me. It's looks pretty fierce too-between it's sheer size, coloration, noticeable fangs! and those long legs...Oh, and for extra creepiness factor, that is part of a snake's shed skin in it's web. I wouldn't doubt it if the spider ate the snake.
Sorry folks, but I feel a duty to share the wildlife of North Carolina with you.

p.s. Kim- you're freaking me out! Now I think I am afraid of cicadas as well... This area of the country is slated for the 17-year cicada next year!

Holy crap that is so cool. A snake skin! I would have been fearful of it leaping out at me as well or startling it with the sound of the shutter on my camera. Love it!

Whoa. I don't tend to be afraid of spiders but I've never mistaken one for a bird either. A snake skin -- that is one predatory spider!

Sick! Definitely looks like something out of my bio textbook--I am officially creeped out.

Sorry, I didn't mean to freak you (or your loyal blog readers) out about the cicada but I'm glad I warned you since a brood of the 17 year variety are heading your way! There was a 17 year "mass hatching" (not sure of the scientific term for that...) the year I graduated from high school. I was basically a prisoner in my own house that summer and lost 10 pounds (no joke) from the stress it caused me!
As you can see, those harmless bugs really do a number on me for some reason! (I think it's the read beady eyes...)

I am terrified of spiders, but that thing is awesome!! I'm just glad it's on your porch and not mine!!

We had the "year of the cicada" in DC a few years back. I remember driving down the street with my windows down and hearing this horrific noise and freaking out about my car being broken beyond repair. That is until I turned my car off and realized that the noise hadn't gone away. They are so incredibly loud...and huge! They are big and clumsy and just disgusting. Maybe you'll be lucky and live in an area that isn't hit quite as hard, as I was.

Holy Crap!! That is in your yard? It's highly disturbing that Bella thought it was a bird. Either she's not very bright (I jest) or that's a seriously freaky spider!
