Call Me Crazy

So my neighborhood is sponsoring a 5k on Saturday May 16th (which also happens to be my dad's birthday-). It seems serendipitous since I have been Googling race dates trying to find something to register for to inspire me. So far I have run 3 different times, and I am using a Couch to 5k plan that has me running for 60 seconds and walking for 90, alternately. I have been completely sedentary until now, so the longest I have continuously run is close to 2 minutes. Seriously. Is it crazy to think that I could run a 5k in 3 weeks? Hannah would say no, but she's not always the best gauge, being Superwoman and all. So maybe I could get some different opinions? Especially from runners? And what should my training be like for the next 3 weeks?
Hannah, I love you. It's just that sometimes you make me question your mortality, while mine is always quite evident.

I definitely think it's possible! The great thing about races is that it's really just a race against yourself, and if you think you can do it you can. Another point, who says you have to run the whole 3.1 miles? There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing run/walk intervals. In fact, that's how I've run all of my races (and I've run a bunch, albeit slowly). Just take it as easy as you need to, push yourself when you feel like it and just have fun! (and don't forget to drink some chocolate milk after the race. It speeds recovery!) Good luck!!

Listen to Anne, she is far more seasoned than I am. That being said, you can totally do it in 3 weeks! Treat the race as though it were your normal training run for that week, doing your intervals and such. I ran/walked my first 5k :)

And I agree on the chocolate milk thing...:)

Well, for ME it would definitely be crazy! But I'm not going to tell you that you can't do it. You are the most disciplined person I know when you put your mind to something. And hey, you'd get to drink chocolate milk afterwards, guilt-free!

Love your comments to/about Hannah.

I think you can definitely do it! You can do your run/walk combo during the race. There are no rules so you can do it at your own pace, plus knowing it's coming up in a few weeks will help inspire you to get ready for it.

P.S. I question Hannah's mortality as well, she seems super human most of the time.

I think I could do the chocolate milk part, but not the running part.

Hooray for all of the changes you have been making recently! I totally get what you have said about struggling with sustainable change (I joined WW again and then seemed to get broadsided by Easter. Okay, sugar in general.) and your true self resurfacing.

Like Anne said, you will totally be ready for your 5K. You've already noticed that you are getting stronger and running a little longer--and that will continue. I started the same way with intervals and gradually started increasing. I still follow a run/walk system (I'm still turtlesque, but I love it).

Sorry for the long ramble. I'll be cheering for you in TX. You CAN do it!!

I'm not a runner, but do you have to run the whole thing? At the very least you could complete it by running and walking, right? Good luck jess!

Way impressive! You can do it! Matt is still trying to get me to run a triathlon-he'll be lucky if I even run a 5k in this lifetime! I will be cheering you on too:-)

I think you can totally do it! When I started running, I'd been running for only threeish weeks before I got roped into a 5K--it's totally do-able. Rock it!
