I Make Stuff

Here's a roundup of some stuff I've made lately for various people and occasions. I made this little owl for Sophie's graduation in the colors of her dorm decor for the fall. He is filled with beans so he functions as a bookend, or just sits nicely on the shelf.
You can also fold his little wings back for a glimpse of a contrasting stripe.
I painted this little trio of canvases to remind me of Micheal Pollan's mantra from In Defense of Food. The lighting is very bad because it is under the cabinets.
Very poor lighting, but I showed it so you can see where it is situated.
As soon as I found out the Smiths were moving I started this as a house warming project. I got the idea from this and decided to make my own 'homemade' looking version. I made one for us and want to make them for everyone.
When Nana and Papa were here at the end of May Nana helped me piece together my baby clothes quilt. I cut all the pieces a few months ago and she showed me how to tie it. I have quilted, but never tied a quilt. I used to consider them lowly, but now I can see their place in the quilting world.
I love looking at it because it includes clothes from all three girls- clothes I bought or received for Lola and then Bella and Fiona both wore, and a few unique to either Bella or Fiona. Some of them are even hand me downs that Eva wore as well. They feature so many cool details- ruffles, buttons, pockets, applique, logos...It is about the size of a crib quilt and we use it casually. I love it. What a great way to remember and incorporate your favorite baby clothes that would otherwise be stuck in a box collecting dust. This way you can see them, use them, and remember them daily.
I have a few more projects in the works right now, as well as lists of many more. It feels good.

Okay I'm kind of flipping out so settle in for a lengthy comment. That owl! Where is the pattern? I have to make one! I have almost every craft book that was in that picture and I have decided I need the ones I don't have. Also, make one of those lovely bird families for me! Seriously, pick me! I love that mantra from Michael Pollan. I think about it all the time...that is such a clever and crafty way to remember it! Finally, that quilt...absolutely, freaking, fabulous. We should live closer and craft together.

Yay! I love it when you show your projects!

Love the owl. You are the softie queen. I think that every time I look at Eva's fox.

Really cool canvases.

Love, LOVE the birds on a branch. Oh my gosh. Beautiful. Question: did you outline the monogram before or after stitching it?

The baby clothes quilt is so sweet. I love all the little pockets.

p.s. I went to the link of the birds and I've seen that before! But never turned it into cool art like you did. I bow to the master.

Jessie, I have loved your blog for awhile now---you feel like a faraway friend to me. I have met your sister Michelle, Jill and Kristi at Womens Conference, and they are such kindred spirits too. Have wanted to comment many times before, but had to let you know how much you inspire me. I liked you even more after your recent depression post. Being real is a quality we as women need more of. Anyways, just had my first daughter after 4 sons, am dying to know your instructions for the baby clothes quilt. Brilliant. Thanks for your honesty and for letting us readers into your life.
