On My Mind

1. Bella was invited to a birthday party by a girl in her class who she really seems to like, and is on her bus. The problem is it's on a Sunday. Bah. Thus I had to break the news about not attending parties on the Sabbath. It did not go well. It did not go well very loudly and for a long time. It didn't go well when it was brought up again at dinner. I thought I had a great idea- we would throw a back-to-school party so that we could get to know everyone better and I could meet the parents of her would-be friends! How fun! The goody bags could be a collection of Bella's favorite things (to get to know her better) or school themed. My excitement was not matched however. Bella said it would be boring because our house is too small and Julia was going to have a bouncy house. All of my retorts sounded lame in my head: "But...I can make cute invitations..." Or "Ours will have a quaint handmade charm." "Ours will be creative." I don't think Bella and I value the same things when it comes to parties. We will likely never have a bouncy house. And now I regret extending the offer.
2. My girls had their first dentist appointments today. I know, Bella is 5 but she hasn't always had insurance. Anyway, let's move on. The good news is her teeth look good and she did not have any cavities. The bad news is she has a 40% overbite (which I never noticed) so he told me she will need braces. His exact words: "You have a college fund- now start an orthodontic fund." Huh. Actually we don't have a college fund. We have a 'Let's cross our fingers that we can afford the luxuries we have become accustomed to such as paying the mortgage and eating'- fund.
3. I've had a lot of anonymous comments lately and while I maintain that my blog is my journal for my uses only, I love commenters! I can't deny that it is flattering to know that people want to hear what you have to say. So read/stalk/comment on. Thanks for the support!
4. I chipped one of my front teeth from a bad habit of holding my sewing needles in my teeth while I make a knot. I am so disturbed by this. I have no insurance, so I can't have it fixed. I have tried in vain to smooth it out with my thumb nail but that has only succeeded in trimming my fingernail. Michelle reminded me that "Your teeth are not your tools" and I now wholeheartedly agree. The upside is that I have stopped using my teeth for anything other than chewing.
5. I am going to start Weight Watchers again with Linda. I know, Linda. I told her she better make up a back story so they don't all hate and ridicule her. I contend that she pose as a woman who was formerly morbidly obese and has an inspiring story of hard work and sacrifice, thus turning her from a target of abuse to a model Lifetime member.
6. Thanks for the pity Formspring questions. I have no illusion that they are anything but, however I'll take what I can get.

Awww. Someday Bella will appreciate your parties. Maybe when she's 26ish. At least she likes the clothes you make for her. My biggest fear is that I will make a bunch of clothes for Z and she will be like, "this is great but you know what I really want? A t-shirt with Tinkerbell on it."

And shut up about the pity formspring questions. I've been wanting to ask you that forever and I keep forgetting. So there.

That is pretty sad about the party, but I always try to remember Grandma's advice about the importance of children learning to deal with disappointment. It helps!

I'm impressed that Bella doesn't have any cavities! We don't have an orthodontic fund, either...

I'm glad you're no longer using your teeth as your tools. I thought of that tonight when Lucas wanted me to open something and I couldn't and went to put it in my mouth.

Linda is going to WW?!!

p.s. the word verification for this comment is "fanchimp."

Oh Sunday birthday parties, I had forgotten they even exist! I remember being upset about having to miss those as a child too, but good for you for setting that standard now.

Landon didn't go to the dentist until he was 5 or 6 either. We don't have college funds or orthodontic funds either!

Linda at Weight Watchers...that would be scorn inducing for sure.

I woke up with a chipped tooth last summer and waited until my dentist appt a month later, and all she did was sand it....I swear Timm could help you out in this area ;) Seriously, though...doesn't he have a lot of tools? Doesn't he have a teeny tiny sander? 1 second of buff and you're as good as new. :)

I'm a lurker but thought I'd comment since you specifically mentioned your lurkers. I really like reading your blog, you're so funny and so honest - I struggle with the same mothering issues so it's nice to know I'm not the only one. I had to laugh at a couple of the things from one of your previous posts since I think the same thing - how getting out of bed is the hardest thing to do and showering doesn't seem worth the effort - I'm right there with you. Does that make me sound like a filthy unclean person now? So anyway, love your blog, love your crafts, and I totally wish you would come and decorate my house.

Thankfully, I don't recall having too many issues with Sunday party problems! I think most of your friends were church members when you were little, so it just didn't come up much. Good luck with that one! And what, exactly, is a "bouncy" house?! Active? Please get her to explain...although it's most likely something in her creative brain. Has she ever been there?

I always laugh at Linda going to WW, but as Grandma always said, if someone thinks they want to loose weight, it's their choice. But, really, what the?! Maybe it's the extended family vacation and cruise that put that extra 25 lbs on her...

I have lost manya commenters over the last 5 months of being a blogger looser. Just haven't had the time to put into it, but I'm going to try harder. The new, larger (WAY larger space) in the store takes up my former blogging time in the wee hours of the night.
It's a bummer to loose your fans!

Bad overbite...oh, dear, most likely from the Petersen side as well. I have had mine corrected twice as an adult and recently got the advice that I needed to have it done again..really? At 61 years of age...better start the fund, or maybe that job with family benefits would be good! HOoray for no cavities.

The dentist most likely would just file your tooth down. I'd watch Timm, however, too much filing could happen easily and not be repairable!!!

You're a nut.

I can totally understand Bella's struggle with the b'day party. It just doesn't seem fair sometimes. I'm proud of you for sticking to your guns. I think I'd try to find some way to rationalize Sebastian's attendance but feel guilty later. You're saving yourself a lot of heartache later sister!

Linda. Weight Watchers? Well, I'm glad you'll be able to go with someone, but really.

Linda? Weight Watchers? Really? I think she'd better stick to your story guidelines or risk being stoned, or worse. Maybe you should recommend that she at least try hard not to be so cute when she goes--like wearing cleaning clothes with no accessories.

Sunday parties, that's always a tough pill to swallow, but as has been said you'll be glad to set a precedent early-on.
