Back In Action...

With a new look:

Funky hair and hair colors are nothing new to me. I have had almost every color, natural and otherwise. I've been a bright blond, burgundy red, near black and every combination in between. I've had bright blue and hot pink streaks. I've rocked a faux hawk, cut my own hair, and usually worn it in a short pixie or a grown-out version. When we moved here 4 years ago I had 2-3" panels of blond in my naturally dark hair. So I like having fun with my hair.

I have very conservative values, but my style is a little more edgy. The problem is, I don't usually feel like my exterior accurately reflects how I feel. Now before you think I'm talking like a teenager, yearning to find expression in rebellious manifestations like piercing and tattoos, consider this: everyone has a style. Everyone tries to express themselves in the way they present themselves to the world, whether it be through clothing, accessories, shoes, hair, or home decor. Everyone has a style they feels represents them and makes them comfortable, whether or not they show that to the world. If you doubt this is the case, imagine that you couldn't wear your own clothing. Imagine if I, or your mother, or your neighbor, or the frumpy person who sits behind you in church got to pick out your clothes. And do your hair and makeup. I'd bet that you would not feel entirely comfortable in that style. It may be a paper bag-shaped house dress, or thigh-high boots, or Birkenstocks. Chances are, one or more of those things makes you cringe. So what difference does it make if my manifestation is in my hair color or my style of dress?

It's not like I emblazoned an enormous tattoo across my chest, proclaiming my allegiance to the Dark Lord.
(Which was plan B if I didn't do the hair color.)
I totally get that most people might not feel comfortable doing this to their hair and some think it looks downright stupid, however, there shouldn't be a judgement of character attached to it. Having bright red hair does not make me any less mature, any less committed to motherhood, or the gospel. It just makes me feel good. It's fun. A harmless, temporary, and reversible bit of fun that has no ramifications or effect on my spirit or my person.

So can't a girl have bit of fun?

I've opened up a poll on my sidebar so that you may answer anonymously. I'm really curious. I like it regardless, but I'd like to get a good idea for what people think. go ahead, give me what you've got. Even if you never comment, consider casting your vote.
And next time, very shortly, I will attempt to explain my one month absence from blogging. But first, let's get this hair thing out of the way.

I'm happy for the picture...but not much of a fan. Good thing I'm a BIG Jessie fan!

I like your explanation though, and the entertainment value didn't disappoint.

I love you. Blonde, black or red.

I love the first photo.

I could never pull that off. Count me among the big Jessie fans!!

I love it but am too chicken to try anything remotely similar.

I really want a nose ring-- a tiny tasteful one not a big honkin' loop or something. Kim says it's too trashy and my boss says he will fire me so at least for now, no nose ring for me, no matter how tiny!

Isn't it interesting how people judge us by our looks? People always tell me I don't look like the type when they find out I'm not married to a man. Oh well, guess three kids, conservative clothes, house in the burbs is just too "normal" looking.

Yay for you for doing what makes you happy!

I love it! I've done something slightly less bold than your look and it was one of my favorites. Way to rock it.

Hooray for a new post! Michelle and I were just lamenting your lack of blogging (and commenting) today, so it's wonderful to have you back.

You have had so many different colors and styles that I don't associate any one particular look to you, so I guess "evolution" or "experimentation" is your look.

yay! you are back! i have missed your updates. you rock the colored hair, for sure! i think it would be fun to do something wild but I lack the guts and right type of hair. my curls are a little wild on their own! :)

I think it is inappropriate and that you explained your actions in so much detail because you really aren't as comfortable with it as you say you are. Maybe if you were 16...

Simply said, I too, am a big Jessie fan.

I don't really like "unnatural" hair color, on anyone. But since you asked, that is my opinion, of which I have many, unfortunately!

Of course I love it and of course I would do it based on the fact that two years ago I had pink hair. I'm pretty sure this is yet another topic we could talk at length about.

Also, the answers to the poll are totally fascinating me.

I'll just tell you how I voted, because I want you to know. I think that your rockstar style suits you perfectly, and I love it that you are brave enough to try so many hairstyles and colors. (I'm pretty sure that I've had the same hairstyle and color since forever. So chicken.)

I think you look great, and I think I want to sock Anonymous in the nose.

I believe in owning my comments.

My first reaction was that it looked great. I still think so.

However, I will argue the point that everything we do affects our spirit in one way or another. We're fooling ourselves if we think otherwise.

I think self expression is a good thing so long as you are okay with the label that goes along with that expression. (Birkenstocks = tree hugger, thigh high boots = hooker, paper bag house dress = frump, bright colored hair = punk rock star?) I think the hair color is eccentric but so are you! If the shoe fits, wear it! :)

I love the hair. I don't care what anyone says.
IT's freakin' cute as heck! (how was that for a Utah sentence?)

I'm just so glad you are blogging, I love your blog- and your style. I would look like a complete idiot with that hair & yes I am jealous that I can't pull it off.

Hooray! JT returns! I'm just so glad you're blogging again, I don't care WHAT color your hair is!

I love it! I have secretly had a fantasy of doing something similar to my own hair, but have thought I would not be able to pull it off at 41. You look great.

Love your hair. Really, I couldn't do it... but, I'm glad you can!

HI Jessie,

I stumbled on your blog through Hannah's and I have really enjoyed looking around. You are super talented and so creative! I want to grow up to be you. :)

I love the hair. You can totally rock that look.

Nice to 'meet' you.

It rocks and so do you! It really makes me want to add color to mine again. I just got it all back to brown after it being black and purple for so long. Now it is short and chunky color would be fun!

You= rock star. Period.
